OTR Update: See Cincinnati With New Eyes

CEOs for Cities held its national meeting at the Contemporary Arts Center this week. The theme was “The City as a Start-Up.” This amazing video was produced to introduce the attendees to Cincinnati. It stars a little boy who lives on Orchard Street riding around Over-the-Rhine and downtown on his Prince Lionheart balance bike. “See Cincinnati. With new eyes.”

Around time 1:02, a poster advertising a Spring in Our Steps cleanup (which OTR Matters fully supports) is shown.

As UrbanCincy reports, a lot is going on this weekend. Phase 1 of Smale Riverfront Park is opening tonight and the GO OTR 5K and Summer Celebration kicks off tomorrow.

WLWT reported on the grand opening of Smale Riverfront Park in this video. The grand opening will include free UDF ice cream, music and fireworks. Keep up with the park on facebook via the Cincinnati Parks page.

Taste of Belgium patio

Friday on Vine in OTR

Two pictures from Vine Street in Over-the-Rhine yesterday. The first is Taste of Belgium bistro‘s new patio at 12th and Vine. The second is the street scene in front of Senate and the other restaurants and shops up the street. The Ferrari in the picture might be, in the words of 5chw4r7z, “Jay Bruce living large.”

Cincinnati deConstructed

Epiventures Breaks Down Local Food Scene with "Cincinnati Deconstructed"

Chef and writer Courtney Tsitouris runs Epiventures which tells “stories about food.” She has joined forces with local film director, Michael Holder, to produce Cincinnati Deconstructed -  a video series about Cincinnati’s food scene and the people who make it interesting. Like the Queen City Project, Cincinnati Deconstructed showcases unique, local people and places that are taking the city to a higher level. Tsitouris describes the project:

Our intention is to give you an intimate, behind-the-scenes peek inside the unique personalities that define the food and drink scene here in Cincinnati.

The most recent video, released today, delves into the world of Belgian-born Jean-Francois Flechet whose Taste of Belgium has a devout following in Cincinnati and beyond. His new Belgian bistro at 12th and Vine was named one of Cincinnati’s best new restaurants and his original location at Findlay Market continues to seduce the taste buds of passersby.

Both of the following videos are top notch and required viewing if you’re at all interested in Cincinnati, OTR, or the stories behind good food:

Molly Wellman was the subject of the pilot episode. Wellman is the craft mixologist who opened Japp’s Since 1879 with Michael Redmond, an owner of Neon’s Unplugged.

Flechet and Wellman are both located in and passionate about Over-the-Rhine. Flechet has multiple locations including Columbus and Nashville, and Wellman is branching across the mighty Ohio to Covington, Kentucky to open the Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar with her business partners.

Thanks to Cincinnati Deconstructed, viewers can clearly see the love both entrepreneurs have for Cincinnati. Getting to know more about the passionate people who are blazing new trails in OTR can’t help but make one fall a little deeper in love with Cincinnati.

Nicola's Restaurant Over-the-Rhine Cincinnati (1)

Over-the-Rhine is Cincinnati's Restaurant Hot Spot

Over-the-Rhine is staking its claim as Cincinnati’s restaurant mecca with a variety of high quality dining experiences. The long waits just to be seated at these establishments tell the story. OTR is in high demand.  Wine Me, Dine Me has the scoop on Cincinnati Magazine‘s Top Ten restaurants of 2012 as well as Best New restaurants:

Top 10…

  1. Orchids at Palm Court (Downtown)
  2. Jean-Robert’s Table (Downtown)
  3. The Palace (Downtown)
  4. Bouquet (Covington)
  5. Nicola’s (Over-the-Rhine)
  6. Cumin (Hyde Park)
  7. Senate (Over-the-Rhine)
  8. Hugo (Oakley)
  9. Boca (Oakley)
  10. Sichuan Bistro (Mason)

Best New:

  • Abigail Street (Over-the-Rhine)
  • Enoteca Emilia (O’Bryonville)
  • A Tavola (Over-the-Rhine)
  • Taste of Belgium (Over-the-Rhine)
Two of the Top 10 and three of the 4 Best New restaurants are located in Over-the-Rhine. Nicola’s leads the way and has been established the longest (15 years). Senate is also in the Top 10 and just celebrated its second birthday. The three Best New winners from OTR are Abigail Street (same owners as Senate), A Tavola, and Taste of Belgium’s bistro.

What is perhaps most remarkable about Over-the-Rhine’s epicurean offerings is their proximity to one another. With the exception of Nicola’s (which is on Sycamore Street), all of the ranked restaurants are on Vine Street. What’s more, there are number of neighboring bars, cafe’s and other eateries that compliment the aforementioned restaurants. Some of those options on Vine Street include The Lackman, Lavomatic, Bakersfield OTR, 1215 Wine Bar & Coffee Lab, among others.

A year ago Jared Wayne, co-owner of A Tavola, foresaw what Vine Street was to become when he told Soapbox Cincinnati:

“There’s a renaissance going on down here you know, it’s kind of like this whole culinary boulevard.”

That’s a vision of Vine Street worth celebrating.

Vine Street has two new residents, A Tavola Pizza bar + trattoria and The Cincy Haus. Here are two photos of the new businesses in the 1200 block of Vine Street.
