Zula Aims for Opening February 12

Zula, a new wine bar and tapas restaurant at 14th and Race across from Washington Park, is planning to open Tuesday, February 12. Zula‘s chef and owner Vik Silberberg says the menu will reflect a Mediterranean influence and center on tapas. A copper-clad wood-burning oven, large communal tables, both a tapas and a mussels bar and an extensive wine program will greet guests to Zula.

Kaze OTR

Kaze and Quan Hapa Bring Asian Fusion to 14th and Vine

It’s an Asian invasion that couldn’t be more delicious and urbane. Kaze and Quan Hapa have stretched Over-the-Rhine’s foodie landscape to two of the corners at Vine and 14th Streets establishing “something of an incongruous Asian beachhead in one little block of OTR” according Soapbox columnist Casey Coston.

Kaze is the largest of OTR’s new gastropubs with room for nearly 200 patrons split among the restaurant’s dining room, bar lounge and outdoor biergarten. Kaze’s bar has been open for less than a month and its restaurant is set to open this week. The biergarten is currently under construction.

Not to be outdone by its larger Asiatic neighbor, Quan Hapa’s take on Asian street food packs a punch. Communal tables, a bar facing the open kitchen, and shelves of kimchi welcome visitors to this beautiful and sleek space on the southwest corner of 14th and Vine.

The Anchor-OTR Now Open

The Anchor-OTR seafood restaurant and oyster bar across from Washington Park is officially open. On its opening night, I dined there with a friend, and we were very impressed with the food, service, wine, and atmosphere. We can’t wait to go back.

The Anchor is a wonderful and delicious addition to the Cincinnati dining scene. The fact that it’s in Over-the-Rhine across from beautiful Washington Park and Music Hall takes it to a whole other level. Congrats to husband/wife team Derek and Jocelyn Dos Anjos! Welcome to OTR!

Connect with The Anchor-OTR via facebook and twitter. It’s open at the corner of Race and 14th Street Tues-Thurs 5-10pm and Fri-Sat 5-11pm. There is on-street parking as well as a Washington Park’s 450 space underground parking garage directly across the street.

Beautiful view

And a few pics from dinner on its opening night:

Started with the clam chowder. If there’s one seafood dish I know, it’s clam chowder and The Anchor’s is some of the best I’ve ever had

ZULA

Zula Restaurant and Wine Bar Sets Early November Opening Date

A new restaurant is slated to open at 1400 Race Street in the Saengerhalle building by early November. Zula Restaurant & Wine Bar is a “modern, relaxed restaurant” that focuses on pairing great wine and craft beer with its eclectic menu. Chef and owner Tsvika (Vik) Silberberg shared with the OTR blog a few of Zula’s special features including:

  • A large communal table with an adjacent chef station where chefs will prepare all cold tapas in front of the guests much like a sushi station
  • State of the art, large wood-burning oven that will produce an array of unique food items including specialty flat breads
  • Mussel bar
  • Open kitchen
  • Enclosed patio

According to this November 2002 Cincinnati Magazine story, the Israeli-born Silberberg has worked and trained in Paris, Milan and San Francisco and has served as the executive chef and general manager of The Celestial and Rookwood Pottery Bistro.

Zula will occupy the corner location of the Saengerhalle building at W. 14th St. and Race St. across from the the soon-to-open The Anchor-OTR and the very popular Washington Park.

The Anchor

The Anchor-OTR Prepares for Opening

The Anchor-OTR, a seafood restaurant and oyster bar at 1401 Race Street, is set to open later this month – just in time for Labor Day and the AVP Cincinnati Open which will bring pro beach volleyball to nearby Washington Park. Chef and owner Derek dos Anjos is excited to bring his East Coast restaurant experience to Cincinnati and especially OTR.

The Anchor-OTR’s location relative to the newly reopened Washington Park

Recently, dos Anjos gave me a tour of his 2,100 square foot space at the corner of W. 14th and Race Streets across from the newly reopened and very popular Washington Park. The restaurant itself will seat about 50 people while the outdoor fenced patio will seat an additional 25.

Charred wood wall covering gives a rustic beachside firepit feeling to the interior

Owner / chef Derek dos Anjos will use part of the basement of The Anchor-OTR as his office from which he’ll manage the restaurant

With unobstructed views of majestic Music Hall, easy access to the 450-car parking garage under Washington Park as well as the bustling activity of the park itself, The Anchor-OTR is sure to be a popular destination for visitors and OTR residents alike. The location seems to always have a slight breeze which is nice and will make its fresh seafood and the beach volleyball across the street during the restaurant’s opening week even more magical.

OTR Update: See Cincinnati With New Eyes

CEOs for Cities held its national meeting at the Contemporary Arts Center this week. The theme was “The City as a Start-Up.” This amazing video was produced to introduce the attendees to Cincinnati. It stars a little boy who lives on Orchard Street riding around Over-the-Rhine and downtown on his Prince Lionheart balance bike. “See Cincinnati. With new eyes.”

As UrbanCincy reports, a lot is going on this weekend. Phase 1 of Smale Riverfront Park is opening tonight and the GO OTR 5K and Summer Celebration kicks off tomorrow.

WLWT reported on the grand opening of Smale Riverfront Park in this video. The grand opening will include free UDF ice cream, music and fireworks. Keep up with the park on facebook via the Cincinnati Parks page.
